Tina, born Anna Mae Bullock, had a difficult childhood filled with poverty and mystery, picking cotton in the fields around Nutbush, Tennessee.

Her mother, Zelma, suffered domestic abuse from her father, Floyd Bullock, before they abandoned her as a child.

The singer suffered years of abuse at the hands of her ex-love and music partner, Ike – whom she married in 1962.

Tina finally fled her abusive marriage in July 1976 with just 36 cents in her pocket.

Looking back, she later claimed that her relationship with Ike was physically abusive, and in her memoir, My Love Story, Tina described her reluctance to marry, writing, “(Testing) would only make him angry, and it might lead to a beating.

Adds: “I definitely didn’t want a black eye on my wedding day.”

She then claimed he forced her to go to a brother while the couple watched a live sex show.

“The experience was so disturbing that I repressed it, scratched it out and created another scenario,” she said.

“People can’t imagine what kind of man he was – a man who takes his brand new wife to a live, pornographic sex show right after their wedding ceremony.”

CAREER REPRESENTATION

After a few appearances on TV shows, Tina re-emerged on the music scene with a sexier image and costumes.

A career revival came in late 1983 when she released her cover of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together.

The cover soared to No.1 on the Hot Dance Songs in the US.

The successful single green-lit her debut album under Capitol Records – Private Dancer, which was released in May 1984 and reached number 3 on the Billboard 200.

The album was certified five times platinum in the United States.
