Buckingham Palace Won’t Comment on Meghan and Harry’s ‘Near Catastrophic’ Car Chase

Buckingham Palace will not comment on the scary car chase Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were engaged on May 16, according to People, who noted that the palace does not typically comment on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s lives after they retire as working members of the royal family.

The couple stepped out in New York on Tuesday night to attend the Women of Vision Awards at the Ziegfeld Ballroom with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, in tow. What should have been a peaceful night quickly turned into a nightmare when the royals were relentlessly chased by paparazzi, leading to a two-hour car chase that put everyone involved at risk, according to the couple’s spokesperson.

Then asked for comment by People, the Palace was silent. Instead, the newly crowned King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden Apple Market and the Royal Opera House Arcade visit to meet with local residents and representatives of surrounding communities.

Although the palace did not comment, New York City Mayor Eric Adams shared his feelings on the matter: “Obviously the press, paparazzi, they want to get the right shot, they want to get the right story, but public safety must always come first,” he told reporters, per AND! News . A representative for the couple echoed the sentiment, share with People: “While being a public figure comes with a level of public interest, this should never come at the expense of anyone’s safety.”

The incident brings to mind the deadly paparazzi chase that took Princess Diana’s life in 1997. Prince Harry reflected on his relationship with his mother in his memoirs, Part, and recalls a time when he drove through the exact tunnel in which his mother died in Paris. “I found the closure I pretended to be looking for,” he intones Part. “I found it in spades. And now I’ll never be able to get rid of it. I thought driving the tunnel would bring an end, or a short time, to the pain, the decade of unrelenting pain. In instead, it brought on the beginning of Pain, Part Deux.”
