Britney Spears shocked viewers in the audience and at home while performing her hit single “I’m a Slave 4 U” at the 2001 MTV VMAs with a live python around her neck. Spears wore a snake charmer outfit that included a green crisscross bralette and colorful crystal-embellished hot pants.

To announce that she was pregnant with her first child, Blue Ivy, Beyoncé took a shining spin to officewear dressing a purple sequin blazer with black wide-leg pants. In 2021, the singer’s mother Tina took to her Instagram account to share that the sizing was off, writing, “It wound up turning into a beautiful night, but two hours before the performance we realized that the pants that I had gotten made were too tight and uncomfortable the panel that I had put in them was not stretchy enough.”

In 2013, Miley Cyrus took the stage to sing a “We Can’t Stop” mashup alongside Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” Cyrus wore a flesh-toned bikini top and high-waisted hot-shorts, paired with a white foam finger and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Her nearly naked look and expressive dance moves seemingly shocked the world, with many calling the performance controversial.
“How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?,” Cyrus could be heard saying in “Miley: The Movement,” her 2013 MTV documentary. “Madonna’s done it. Britney [Spears has] done it. Every VMA performance. Anyone that performs. That’s what you’re looking for.”

Curated by the brand’s cofounder and design director Shayne Olivier, the singer’s outfit included a graphic T-shirt, cutout pants and a corset-like attachment.
